Even that bond of cause and effect you take for necessity is, in truth, only a habit that repeated experience has planted in you. Reason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passions; and no 'ought' can ever be drawn from an 'is' of its own accord. First ask which impression a given idea springs from. And when the argument ties itself in knots, step away for a meal and a game with a friend.
